Buyers Guide

Types of Ceramic Frying Pans

The non-stick cookware market offers buyers so much to choose from. Each of the materials used to make the pan holds up differently in medium to extreme temperature. In some materials, for instance, the thickness and heat transfer make the pan heat up slowly. Others crack and reduce the non-stick ability under high heat. As such, there is a need to know how to identify the best non-stick cookware.

frying mixed vegetable in the nonstick pan

The use of ceramic materials in cooking utensils became widely used after chefs wanted a suitable replacement to Teflon that was previously popular.

Ceramic pan's surfaces are made from a mixture of a sand component called silica, oxygen, binders, color pigments, and reinforcing agents. There are two types of ceramic utensils that we have discussed below.

Pure Ceramic Utensils

The pure ceramic utensils are made from pure clay that is fortified with sand particles. The materials are shaped and sized to desirable form then tossed into high temperature furnaces of up to 1915 degrees Fahrenheit. They then go through a glazing and decorative process to make them smooth and waterproof.

Ceramic Coated Utensils

The process to coat the pan with ceramic covering starts with turning the inorganic components into the form of a gel using the Sol-gel process. The paste is then applied to the anodized or steel surface of the pan by either spraying or dipping into the gel.

The pan is then healed using high heat and left to cure. Depending on the manufacturer, the application process can be done multiple times to ensure complete coverage that is durable and scratch free. (1)

Base Material

The base materials in ceramic non-stick cookware refer to the surfaces that are coated with ceramic paste to achieve the non-stick property. The materials are mainly metals. The common metals used in base manufacture are copper and aluminum.

a woman is frying vegetable

Aluminum is popular due to its effectiveness to dissipate heat evenly and fast. The metal, however, does not support induction heating.

Ceramic cookware that supports induction heating is fortified with a magnetic metal base. The magnetic base of the utensil sits on the induction stove and transfers heat to the pan.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Ceramic Pans

Advantages

  • Ceramic cookware is non-stick. The food you cook on the ceramic utensils does not stick on the surface. This makes the cleanup process easy with just regular hand washing or a quick wipe.
  • The materials used to make ceramic utensils are not harmful to health. This prevents release of toxic fumes that harm human beings and pets.
  • Ceramic cookware does not react with acid, which is common on bare metal utensils giving your food a foul taste.

  • Ceramic utensils are easy to clean owing to their non-stick capability
  • Ceramic cookware is affordable. In fact, many brands have the ceramic utensils sold in sets of a variety of utensils of varying size.
  • Ceramic utensils are beautifully decorated with handles that are shiny and easy to hold. They will stand out when you place them in your kitchen utensil rack at any time.

Disadvantages

  • Ceramic coated pans and pots work great when they are new. The non-stick surface however, wears off after usage for some time. Proper care might ensure that they last for long, but eventually, the wear down is inevitable and you are back to dealing with a sticky cooking surface or the need for a new utensil.
  • The light feel of the ceramic-coated utensils makes them cheap and not durable. The pure ceramic utensils are much more durable but come at an exorbitant price.
  • The ceramic utensils require hand washing to enable the ceramic coating to last longer. Tossing in the dishwasher even for the cookware advertised as dishwasher friendly chips the non-stick ceramic and shortens its lifespan.

  • The delicate nature of the applied non-stick material chips easily when metal utensils scratch the surface of the pan. For a long life of ceramic-coated utensils, limit usage of utensils to only silicon, nylon, and wooden utensils. Storing on the kitchen rack also requires distancing from other utensils that might scratch the ceramic coated utensils
  • Ceramic cookware also performs poorly under high heat. Moderate heat should be used to prevent the non-stick material from chipping. Regulating the heat is not always possible and it may slip your mind. Low heat also means that your food will cook slower.

Frequent Questions

How to Clean Ceramic Pans?

Cleaning after use is necessary for any utensil. The ceramic pans come with manufacturer's instructions that will help you clean them safely. All the pans recommended method is hand washing with a select few being safe for dishwasher cleaning.

Be sure to allow the pan to cool down before adding water to start cleaning. This will prevent rapid contracting and possible chipping of the cooking surface.

Gently scrub with soapy water and a non-abrasive cleaning sponge to get food leftovers off the pan. When you have burnt food items on the cooking surface, soak the pan in water for some time to make them easier to remove.

Is Ceramic Better than Nonstick?

In terms of performance, both ceramic and non-stick utensils serve the purpose of making cooking easy without food sticking to the utensil. Ceramic utensils have an advantage because they last longer and are not affected as much as non-stick utensils when cooking on high heat.

Non-stick utensils are cheap and commonly available. However, expect to use them only for a short period before you need to replace them with new ones.

Why Do Ceramic Pans Lose Their Nonstick Properties?

The ceramic coating on ceramic pans is durable for long if used properly. However, improper usage will result in your pan losing its non-stick properties before you get value for your money.

One way that the non-stick pan loses its durability is using it in excessive heat. The regular expansion and contraction will cause the ceramic coating to chip and come off.

perfect fried egg in pan

Cleaning with abrasive materials and cleaning in the dish washer will also cause the pan to lose its no-stick ability overtime.

Using a cooking spray on the ceramic pans also forms a coat over the cooking surface, which reduces the pans' non-stick ability. Instead, use regular oil that contains no propellants whenever you are using these pans to cook your food.
