Zwilling J.A. Henckels Spirit 12-Piece 3-Ply Ceramic Nonstick Cookware Set

Design:

The Zwilling 12-piece cook set comes without any out of the ordinary coloring, offering a simple metallic look that works well with a modern kitchen and looks quite polished. The 3-ply construction of the metal gives them a solid, sturdy, and slightly heavy feel but in a way that becomes unnoticeable after a while.

Aside from the body of the pieces, the set comes with glass lids and large loop handles which prove to be quite helpful during cooking, for reasons discussed in the usability section.

Materials:

The pieces in this set have stainless steel bodies about 3mm in thickness, featuring an aluminum core. The inside features non-stick ceramic coating, which is both PTFE and PFOA-free, releasing no harmful fumes while you cook.

You can use the cookware on just about every standard stovetop including induction. This information is important to note because most ceramic cookware is made with an aluminum base and as such, they are not suitable for induction cooktops.

The Zwilling Spirit series is made from a rare combination of stainless steel – which is magnetic and allows for the induction to work – and aluminum – which makes the heat distribution of the cookware even. The inner coating is a brand of ceramic nonstick coating called Thermolon or CeraForce.

Usability:

While the stainless steel offers durability and a clean look, the aluminum core ensures that the cookware heats up quickly and that the heat is evenly distributed to cook your food just right.

The tempered glass lids allow you to monitor your cooking, and the large loop handles will enable you to handle them safely even with oven mitts on - not to mention, they stay cool to the touch, so you don't burn yourself you when you grab them.

The pots and pans also come equipped with dripless pouring rims to help prevent spilling any hot water or oil while you cook.

Zwilling claims that the set is safe to use in the oven up to temperatures of 500 degrees Fahrenheit, though we don’t recommend exposing the glass lids and ceramic coating to more than 400 degrees at the most. If you can, you should avoid using extremely high temperatures altogether, however, since the heat response for these pieces is rather quick in comparison to only stainless-steel cookware.

The pans and pots from this set have a solid, reassuring feeling to them, you can tell just from the thickness of the material that these pans will remain flat for a long time. The ceramic surface has performed flawlessly, nothing was sticking to it but we have to emphasize the need to keep the heat under control while using these items.

Ceramic coating is always more sensitive than other materials – this is the tradeoff for getting both healthy and nonstick properties at the same time. However, this set is sold at a higher price point than most other ceramic cookware, so you have even more incentive to be careful during both cooking and cleaning.

Cleaning:

Cleaning the pieces in this set is a simple task, but you have to be careful because these pieces are prone to chipping if you don't take care of them properly.

They should never be thrown in the dishwasher but instead hand-washed with a soft sponge and just a tiny bit of soap. If possible, you may not even have to use soap at all. Just rinsing with hot water and wiping the insides down with a paper towel will have you all set to use the pieces again.

The set contains:

  • An 8-inch frying pan
  • A 10-inch frying pan
  • A 1-quart saucepan
  • A 3-quart saucepan
  • A 3-quart saute pan
  • A 6-quart Dutch oven
  • A 6-quart steamer insert
  • A 6-quart pasta insert
  • 4 lids - for the saucepans, saute pan, and Dutch oven

Pros

  • Stainless steel is quite durable
  • Aluminum core gives the pieces a quick heat response
  • Large handles prevent dropping the pots while wearing oven mitts or using towels to grab them
  • Tempered glass lids let you look at what you're cooking
  • Ceramic non-stick coating is PTFE and PFOA-free, making the pieces environmentally friendly.

Cons

  • Pieces may chip easily
  • Require much more care than standard cookware to keep them looking like new

Zwilling Spirit 3-Ply Ceramic Nonstick 10-Piece Cookware Set

The 10-piece set contains the same items than the 12-piece collection except the steamer insert and the pasta insert. These accessories are great if you are frequently cooking pasta and/or steaming vegetables so they can be a useful part of a first cookware set for a new kitchen.

If you are looking to replace an existing set of different materials your kitchen will probably have those items already, so you are better off buying the 10-piece set.

Alternatives to consider

Both the GreenPan Paris and GreenPan Valencia sets offer a viable option to Zwilling if you are looking for high-quality ceramic cookware.

This Gotham Steel set with ceramic and titanium coating is another great option to look at, especially if you are looking for that elegant contrast between copper-colored finish and the classic grey exterior.

Conclusion

The Zwilling Spirit ceramic sets are among the most durable ceramic items thanks to their unique 3-ply construction. These pots and pans are also induction ready which is another rarity for ceramic cookware. However, this inner coating is the most sensitive of all materials so will have a shorter lifespan.

If you are prepared to take extra care while using them – paying attention to the utensils used, the heat applied to them as well as the way you handle them while putting them away to the cupboard – these stylish, solid pots and pans will serve you well for a long time. If you know yourself – or other members of the family – not to take the best care of cookware, you might wanna opt for a more economic set.
